Literacy at Wymondham College

National Year of Reading 2026
If you’re into it, read into it.

2026 is the National Year of Reading. The campaign encourages the nation to Go All In on reading, recognising the impact it has on opportunity, confidence and future success.

At Wymondham College, reading has always been central to who we are. This national focus gives us an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the work already happening across the College.

Our Literacy Vision

Literacy is everyone’s responsibility. We focus on reading, writing and oracy because strong language skills unlock the curriculum in every subject.
We know that reading at or above a student’s chronological reading age improves access to learning and supports achievement across the curriculum. Reading, writing and speaking are developed deliberately and consistently in lessons.

READY to Read

Our whole-school approach is built around a simple question: Are you READY to read?

R – Read with purpose
E – Explicit decoding and vocabulary
A – Academic talk
D – Deliberate reading routines
Y – You show your understanding

This ensures that literacy is not an add-on but part of everyday classroom practice.

Reading at Wymondham College

All students’ reading ages are assessed and tracked. Where additional support is needed, targeted interventions are put in place. Emerging readers are identified and supported through structured programmes and small-group provision.
In lessons, teachers:
• Model fluent and expressive reading
• Pre-teach and revisit key vocabulary
• Encourage students to track the text
• Break complex texts into manageable sections
• Ask questions that require explanation and evidence

Reading Culture

We are proud of our reading culture. This includes tutor-time reading, Reading Buddies, Reader Leaders, book clubs, Carnegie Shadowing, celebration assemblies and a well-used library that is open every day.
Reading is encouraged, discussed and celebrated across the College.
