Spectacular Production at Wymondham College
It is some years since Wymondham College staged a large-scale musical, which is not surprising considering the limitations of their Sports Hall as a theatre. But this show, written by Ben Elton originally as a vehicle for Queen to perform many of their 1970s hits in tribute to Freddie Mercury, and which is now available for amateur performance, is well suited to the large spaces this hall provides. And with what enthusiasm the youngsters, aged from 16 to 18, tackled it, before an audience of parents and their own schoolfellows who clapped and cheered at every opportunity.
Set in a futuristic world, where live music and instruments are banned, the show tells the story of two teenage rebels who try to recreate the past, and have to excavate buried guitars and overcome some repressive police to do so. As well as solo and duet numbers there are many opportunities for large scale chorus work, all at a frenzied pace and all, of course, performed with amplified guitar and other accompaniments.
A large number of staff and pupils were responsible for the staging, the singing, the costumes, the music, the choreography, the spoken lines, the spectacular lighting, and even the impressive 16-page glossy programme. Wymondham College has often been quoted as trend-setting. Could this be setting the trend for the 'High School Musical' of the future?
