Community Cohesion Project

Visiting community projects

On Wednesday 2nd March a group of Year 12 students were joined by a couple of students from Thetford Grammar School to explore various local community projects in a community cohesion programme kindly organised for us by Richard Wills, Pride in Breckland Coordinator, Breckland Council.

The afternoon started by visiting the Green Ventures Bike Project in Thetford which is a Social Enterprise run by Keystone Development Trust and coordinated by Chris Norton. The Enterprise is a bike recycling shop that sells refurbished bikes that have been collected from donations and Waste Recycling Centres. The main aim of the project is to encourage healthy community activity and reduce waste that is sent to landfill. If you are looking for a good quality second hand bike at an excellent price, this is the place to go!

We then went to Project Rainbow at The Surge in Watton which was formed over two years ago to address the lack of casual, recreational facilities for young people in Watton. This project is driven forward by two local businessmen, Paul Adcock and Julian Horn.

The Surge (a former doctors’ surgery) utilises the spaces available by designating rooms for specific activities such as a music room, karaoke room, an art room, quiet room, wii games room and many others. It was clear that the project is a fantastic example of what a community can achieve together.

Our visit will be followed up by a presentation by Sustainable Community Officers at Breckland Council Offices on the importance of Community Cohesion when our students will explore how they can create a more cohesive community outside of the College.
