Disneyland Paris Rugby Tournament

The under 13 and under 14 sides from Wymondham College travelled to Disneyland Paris during the Easter holidays to take part in an international Rugby tournament.

The under 14 side started their tournament at 9.30 on the Sunday Morning having arrived at Disneyland Paris the previous evening. With weary eyes and tired legs they did not make an explosive start against their opponents from South Gower and lost 12-0.

In their remaining pool matches they defeated Town Close School (a long way to travel for such a local fixture) 31 -7 and Isleworth and Syon School 17- 4.

As runners up in their group they made it into the final where they faced their initial opponents South Gower RFC. For the final each team was allocated an International player to help them with their preparation. The College side were fortunate to have Andy Gomarsall who plays at scrum-half for Leeds Carnegie and has 37 England caps. After helping the players warm up and fine tune their moves the side were ready to seek revenge for their previous victory. The game started at a blistering pace and thanks to tries from Kieran Gonzalez and Joe Goreham the college team took a 12 - 0 lead. Just before half time South Gower hit back with 2 tries to make the score12-10 at the break.

Early in the second half South Gower took the lead 15 -12 due to another try. The College side remained focused and tackled well in midfield through George Worth and Toby Johnson, on the wings with Will Rabbet and Zobias Gorman and at full back with Joe Taylor. A break by Taylor took the team into the opponents 22 with minutes remaining. After a passage of play Kieran Gonzalez charged down a kick and then touched down to put the side 17 -15 in the lead. Ben Masdin converted the try to extend the lead to 19-15 and bring victory and the trophy to the side. The under 13 player of the tournament was Kieran Gonzalez and the most improved player on tour Will Rabbet.

The under 14 side started the tour off with a match against local French opposition Champs sur Marne. In a free flowing game the college side won 43 -24. Their second match against French opposition was RCUM Val De Europe. Again for this fixture the side had Andy Gormassall as one of their coaches. After initially being 10- 0 behind the College side once again played their free flowing rugby and were victorious 45 - 15. In the final they played Maidstone Grammar School. The tone for the game was set with the first tackle of the game by Connor Lancaster who knocked his opponent back with great ferocity and strength. The second try by the College side was a great example of their running game. Matt Long caught a high ball from the re-start and made a break deep into the opponents half. He then passed the ball to Henry Phoenix who evaded 2 tackles before he was caught. The ball was then off loaded to Kieran Gonzalez who scored under the posts. The resulting conversion was then made by Scott Lyle. The College side were clear winners in the end 31 -5.  The under 14 player of the tournament was Matt Long and the most improved player on tour Connor Lancaster.

As well as all the Rugby the students also enjoyed 3 days of attractions and rides in the Disneyland Park and Studios and the swimming pool at their location The Davy Crockett Ranch.
