On 29th June 2011, Wymondham College was visited by members of the South Norfolk District Council, they challenged the students to plan the development of the Wymondham area to account for the growing population.
Year 12 students co-operated with pupils in year 10 to embrace the challenge in hand – despite the complexity of many of the tasks. Once divided into groups, we were presented with our first assignment; the consideration of a housing development bringing an influx of 2000 dwellings to the Wymondham area, it was necessary to identify the key services/facilities that they would require – surprisingly, this was the easiest part of the day.
Following this, we were provided with a map of Wymondham and its immediate surroundings and asked to discover plausible positions for the new developments of housing in addition the services that were required. This was, in truth, a rather fun activity within which the whole team was able to participate. Nevertheless, the day was to become more challenging yet.
Having already planned our developments in Wymondham, we were then provided with all the relevant objections and supporting statements for our plans; consequently, our primary ideas had to be altered due to constraints – this, I must admit, was a rather frustrating element of the morning!
Thankfully, the Planning Team and College teaching staff were available to assist us and we were highly appreciative of their help!
To finish the day, we presented our planning ideas and were judged on many factors includig the justification of the plans and the considerations of the local people. Congratulations to James Barlow, Herbie Brumby and Ellie Preece for winning this competition!
Also, we must thank the Council for this insightful morning – it was enjoyed by all. In addition to this, thank you for all the teachers involved as well as the students that took part.
