Science Week

We had glorious sunshine for National Science and Engineering Week, both the students and the teachers had great fun meeting all the visitors to the marquee.

Dr Mark Wilkinson, Histopathology department, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital started the week off by not only looking at some of the case studies they do but also an ethical debate about heart transplants.

Banham Zoo led the afternoon session for Year 8 students. We were fortunate to meet Chloe the Madagascan Hissing Cockroach and Elton the Python, who is incidentally, is a girl, they found that out when she laid an egg!

The PhD students from UEA joined us on Tuesday with their very expensive kit to look at Spectroscopy with Year 13 Chemistry students.

Wednesday morning we were joined by the Lotus team, Year 12 Physics students were learning about the possibilities of sustainable and carbon neutral cars.

On Wednesday Afternoon we welcomed Professor Martin Richardson from De Montfort University, he travelled over to talk to the students about his work with Holograms. He provided a very atmospheric lecture in the Drama theatre and promises to come back to make a Hologram next time. He left us to travel down to London to meet Johnny Depp, as he was about to start making a Hologram of him for Madame Tussauds, we were obviously the perk for the day!

Years 9 and 8 students encountered The Naked Scientists on Thursday. This Science Show was hilarious and the liquid Nitrogen in the Coca Cola bottle big bang experiment could be heard from Lincoln! The video is going to be on the website.

On Friday we were joined by Camouflaged Learning, the students were challenged with Engineering ‘Wet Your Pants’ contraptions. The students managed to use over 55 rolls of masking tape in the whole day, which alone was quite an achievement.

Finally Saturday morning, the team from Aston Martin were in to showcase the Vantage, this was well received by the Year 10 students. We finished the week with a small presentation to our Year 5 and 6 students who have been attending Master classes since October.
