Visitors from Open Gate School

One of our visitors gives us her thoughts on her time at Wymondham College.

These are Hana's own words, I'm sure you will agree that her English is excellent.

We arrived at Wymondham on Monday 22nd of September at 23:45. The way by airplane was quite interesting, but we were all too tired to think about that. We were divided in five houses – I, Simona, Jan and Frantisek were accommodated in Cavell.

In the morning we were all surprised because of the morning bell, which was very loud and some of us even thought there’s a fire somewhere. We were told where to go and after a meeting where they took photo of us, gave us our timetables and showed us our guides we visited our first lessons in here. The lessons were much easier than in Czech so we mostly just watched and sometimes added something we knew. We were all confused about how big the areal is and that nearly every subject has got its own building, but we found it quite cool.

I was a little bit disappointed about school food, because we usually salt a lot, but there was no salt in the food and even no salt in whole refectory! Anyhow – we enjoyed it very much.

We had lots of trips – to London, which was pretty but very busy and where most of the people went shopping; to Norwich, where we visited castle dungeons, museum of art and in Funky Monkey; and Cambridge, where we travelled by boats and had a look around the city, which was very nice and interesting.

We did lots of activities – laser game, hockey, sleeping in the gym (somebody slept in the tent and few crazy people slept completely outside!) and so on.

We also learned here lots about English culture – English people were very talkative and friendly to us, but they often didn’t like music we listen to [such like AC/DC, Iron Maiden etc.], but that was only one of very few things which I can point out. I liked the day when we went to primary school and tried to teach little children something from Czech, because I love little children and they all did their best.

At Wymondham everybody was still asking us how to say lots of things and at the end I often met people walking down the street saying ‘Ahoj!’ to me and I really liked it.

At the end I’d like to say thank you to all of the staff who cared about us and to all the people who were friendly and patient with me, when I didn’t understand and special thanks to Livia who was my guide, to all girls from Cavell, to Grace and Ester who mailed me what’s up and provided me music lesson. Thank you.
