Students at Wymondham College have a great opportunity to develop their writing skills by working with a published author.
Mr Joe Treasure began work as Writer in Residence from this September. As well as teaching in the English Department, Mr Treasure will be working outside the classroom with pupils who want to develop an interest in writing fiction, memoir or poetry. His plans include writing groups, live readings and he hopes that he can help some pupils to get their work published.
Mr Treasure’s first novel, The Male Gaze, was published by Picador in 2007 and gained excellent reviews, being Identified as a ‘hot ticket’ by the Independent on Sunday and selected by BBC Radio Five Live as April’s book of the month.
His second novel, Besotted, is scheduled for publication in March 2010.
Mr Treasure, who is a graduate of Oxford University and gained an MA in creative writing from Royal Holloway College, University of London, has recently returned from Los Angeles where he has lived for past four years. He admits that rural Norfolk will be a very different proposition but he is relishing the opportunity to raise the profile of creative writing in the College and thinks that the Norfolk countryside may even provide some inspiration for his next novel.
Principal of Wymondham College, Mr Melvyn Roffe said “I am delighted to have Joe Treasure at the College this year as part of our commitment to developing the creativity of our students. The opportunity to work with and alongside a published author is something to which I know many students are looking forward. Joe will bring a completely new dimension to our students’ creative writing.”
