Growing up, planting the seeds for sucess

Growing Up, a company formed by College sixth-formers, has created a gardening kit aimed at encouraging children aged from five to 10 to grow their own vegetables and learn more about where food comes from.

This week, they were crowned Company of the Year at the 2010 Aviva Young Enterprise Norfolk Business Awards, beating eight other teams in the county finals at Open in Norwich.

They will now represent Norfolk at the Young Enterprise regional competition in Cambridge on June 22.

The scheme gives youngsters a chance to sample the world of business while still at school.

Growing Up, formed by 17 Year 12 students, was described by chairman of the judges Ian Bullock as “an energetic business with real passion, distinctive branding and an obvious determination to succeed”.

Managing director Chloe Goreham, 17, said: “A lot of children do not realise where their food comes from before it goes on to their plate and we were trying to conquer that problem.

“Growing Up's gardening kits mean they can learn by growing their own fruit and vegetables.”

Assistant managing director Victoria Jones, also 17, said: “This is all about getting youngsters off the sofa, away from the TV and computer games - and out into the fresh air of the garden, learning more about the food they eat.”

More than 30 of the £14.95 gardening kits have already been sold, and Growing Up hopes they will now be promoted in primary schools, garden centres and farm shops across Norfolk.

The team was supported by business adviser Stephen Thorley, of Thorley Magorrian Associates, and teacher James Bayston.
