A Great Success
The combined dramatic and musical talents of the students of Wymondham College were on fantastic display in the College’s recent production of Les Misérables.
With 5 performances over 5 nights, climaxing in a sensational end of half-term gala evening, the students demonstrated a level of musical and acting ability that would have done professional performers proud. With over 100 students from all years taking part, many young people will undoubtedly have had sparked a sense of what it might be to work in the theatre and the creative arts.
Although the story will have been known to most, the superb singing and playing brought a freshness to even the most ardent fan’s awareness of the music and the plot. Led by the Director of Music, Mr Andrew Day and Music teacher Miss Tania Ward, the College orchestra played what is extremely difficult music with spirit and tenderness, and showed a wonderful assured confidence in supporting the actors on stage.
The acting as well as the singing was exceptionally good across all parts. Such is the level of talent that the College was able to field two casts across the week. Particular praise must go to those, largely in the Sixth Form, who took lead roles. Tom Hoskins as Marius; Florence Taylor as Cosette; JohnJames Wetherstone and James Doo as Valjean, James Turner and Hugh Vermont as Javert, Sarah Winstanley and Sarah Hewerdine as Madame de Thenardier, Max Hilton and Jacob Brooke as Thenardier; Lily Evans and Ellie Isherwood as Eponine, Ben Partridge as Enjolras and Alice Harvey and Holly Allton as Fantine all were outstandingly committed and communicated their roles superbly.
The cast were co-directed by Mrs Claire Foreman and Mrs Sue Daynes who brought out such a very high level of talent. Each night was sold out and the cast and crew enjoyed extended standing ovations and choral encores to close each evening. It is not a surprise that some of the performers have been scouted by musical and drama groups across the County!
DVDs of the performance are availalbe from the College.
