Wymondham Under 15s enter the final 32 of the Daily Mail National Cup
After a weekend of heavy snow, there was doubt over the match against Wellingborough going ahead, but with some last minute clearing of the snow by Mr. Morgan the fixture was judged playable. Wymondham did not know much about their opposition and decided to keep it tight.
Sam Smith made a superb early break, going very close to the opposition try line, but some strong defence from Wellingborough stopped him from putting any points on the board. A few moments later, Wymondham earned themselves a penalty within range but Hon Sang Lee failed to convert. The first half was very tightly contested with Wellingborough playing a tactical kicking game. Olly Ewing was taken off injured after a superb first 20 minutes where he took several high balls superbly and gained good yards in attack. The game never really opened up, although Wymondham did give away a penalty which saw Wellingborough take a 3-0 lead into the second half.
The second half was largely dominated by Wymondham College playing tactical rugby. The loss of Charlie Taylor with a pulled calf muscle was a huge blow. In another tight half there was not much to choose between the two teams. In the fading few moments of the game, Wymondham got themselves into the Wellingborough 22 and managed to put some serious pressure on. After the referee gave two penalties for constant infringements around the contact area, he decided to give a third and award a penalty try. This was converted by captain and top points scorer Toby Fletcher who took his tally for the season to 116 points. Wymondham managed to hold on for the final 2 minutes and become one of the 32 best Under 15 rugby teams in the Country.
The boys now look forward to an away day at either Ecclesbourne School or Bedford School. Bedford School were winners in the Under 15 Daily Mail Cup in 2006.
