FIRST for Wymbots

Robot Competition

The Regional FIRST Lego League tournament took place at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. The WymBots team were not serious contenders for the Robot part of the competition due to the short length of time afforded to building and programming their robot. The aim was to watch and learn from the experts so that a realistic attempt at winning the tournament could be made in subsequent years. The standard of robot design and programming from the top teams was outstanding and has given the WymBots team plenty of food
for thought!

The Project
The Smart Moves project encourages research into how different kinds of transportation may under perform. The WymBots team considered the problems that prevent paper being transported using the least amount of energy and leaving the minimum possible carbon footprint. This is a real issue within the college community and one for which the team tried to devise an innovative solution. Chris was the main driver behind presenting analysis
to a panel of judges. He used everyone in the team and they all took turns to impress the judges with their
excellent presentation skills. The judges also seemed genuinely surprised but grateful to learn that a piece of
paper will travel 20,000 miles before it goes through just one process of recycling.

Teamwork
The WymBots team was awarded one of the main trophies in recognition of their excellent team work. The Technical Judges particularly liked an answer given by Gabriel; he cited the best aspect of the project as getting to know new people across the school community, especially integrating Marco, a student who arrived at the college from Hong Kong only a year ago, into the team as Chief Programmer.

Especial thanks goes to Mark Sheard who works in schools as a Science Ambassador and is a FLL coach with an impressive track record – World Final 2006! Mark visited us on four separate Wednesdays to help us with our effort. We would not have entered the tournament without his sage advice and encouragement.
