National Science Week

An Action Packed Science Week is planned at Wymondham College

The College will be supporting National Science and Engineering Week during 12–21 March 2010 with a wealth of activities designed to give students a chance to explore more diverse aspects of science and engineering and see how they might lead to a future career.

Banham Zoo will be bringing the Zoo to the school and helping students to discover how the earth supports our smallest to our largest animals. Their ‘Life Webs’ sessions will give a great insight into biodiversity, food webs and why we need to conserve the earth and it‘s animals. The sessions will be interactive and fun and students will get to meet some of the smaller animals face to face.

Professor Martin Richardson will be speaking about some of his outstanding work in Holography. How science is even reaching pop culture! Professor Richardson is a creator of holograms and lenticular images. His work covers the spectrum of fine art and design. He is well known for holographic and lenticular portraiture, as well as undertaking cutting edge research into the application of holography.

Dr Mark Wilkinson will deliver a session on genetics and ethics which will include a discussion about the genetics of Huntingdon’s disease and more critically the ethics of testing for it.

Martyn Anderson from Lotus Engineering will bring along the famous ‘Eco Elise’ made largely out of hemp. He will explain the manufacturing processes and materials used inn the car. Students will test the differences between Aluminium, Hemp and GRP.

The Naked Scientists will also be at the College with their – Live Science Show. A great display of how exciting Science can be! One hour shows with plenty of opportunities for oohs and aaahs!

The potential star of the show will be an Aston Martin Vanquish, which will be appearing on site. This session will look at careers and how Science can be used in development of Engineered Cars.

Director of Technology Miss Kate Finlay commented “Science is a rapid, face-paced subject that requires students to ask questions. One of the reasons we are celebrating National Science and Engineering week is that we want our students to see how far reaching and wide ranging Science is. It is also a great opportunity to see and do activities that our students do not get to experience in a day-to-day Science lesson.
