The Wymondham College under 14’s won an epic encounter with Thorpe St Andrew this afternoon. Having lost the toss, Thorpe Captain Olly Stone decided to put Wymondham into bat. Toby Fletcher opened with Nick Moore and the pair was pushing runs well until Nick Moore was bowled by Olly Stone with a ball that clipped his leg stump on just 16. In came Harry Barratt who had moved up the order and hit 17 from 10 balls before being caught at mid-on from the bowling of Bircham. Josh De Lyon came in with the score on Just 40 and De Lyon and Fletcher knew they had work to do. Even though they rode their luck at times they almost saw the batting innings in with a partnership of 104. Fletcher (54 not out) got his first half century for the Under 14’s and De Lyon (50) also got his first half century of the season before being caught out. Billy Falcon (0 not out) was also at the crease at the end of play leaving Thorpe chasing a total of 144.
The Thorpe batting attack was left chasing just over 7 runs an over, but with an experienced and very able top order they started very strongly. On just 22 runs, the partnership of Olly Stone and Harry Barker collapsed with Barker being caught at mid-off by Josh De Lyon from Toby Fletcher’s bowling. Olly Stone showed some superb batting against a college side again this season making 38 before being bowled by ex-Thorpe student Mark Elms. At this stage the big hitting Dave Micklethwaite was already at the crease and on 13 runs. He then went on to make 57 before being caught by stand-in wicketkeeper Tom Mee. On his way to his 57 he hit four 4’s and four 6’s. With the score on 117, the Thorpe middle order needed 28 runs from 20 balls. With some clever field placing and excellent bowling by Fletcher he managed to get Thorpe to pull up just short on 134 for 5, claiming the last two wickets of Capleton (5) and Allen (0) for himself. Left at the end of the innings were Bircham (16 not out) and Fossey (0 not out).
Congratulations to the Under 14 Team who become the first team to win a County Cup in Cricket for Wymondham College this season.
