Music

We work hard to ensure that Music is challenging for all, and that all students are given the opportunity to be involved both in and out of the classroom.

There are many activities outside normal lesson time. The College boasts 3 choirs - a Senior Choir (SATB), a Girls' Choir and a Boys' Junior Choir. There is a 60 piece Concert Band; a String Orchestra; also a Jazz Band; Junior Jazz Band; Recorder Ensemble; Saxophone Group; Flute Choir; Clarinet Club; Brass Group and a Music Theory Club.

At the College, there is at least one concert at the end of each term and also a service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas. In recent years our Concert Band has visited many primary schools to give Concerts. In 2010, we played at Holt Primary School. In 2009, we played at Sheringham Primary School and in 2008, we performed for the students of Holt Primary School. In 2007, we played for 800 primary school children in St Mary's Church, Bury St Edmunds. Every year, we perform at The Royal Norfolk Show on the Bandstand several times over the two days.

Large musical productions take place regularly at College and have included "Oliver" (2000), "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" (2002), "We Will Rock You" (2008) and "Hairspray" (2010). There have also been other smaller scale productions requiring music provision like "Daisy pulls it off" (2006).

As well as working closely with the Drama Department, the Music Department also enjoys a special relationship with the College Chapel. Music is provided for daily Chapel Assemblies and weekly Sunday Services. There are more formal Services for Founders' Day, Remembrance Day and Leavers' Day.

One of the highlights of the Music calendar is the Inter-House "Mair Cup" music competition in February, each year. This is the largest whole school event and involves 450 performers and an audience of pupils, parents, governors and guests totalling 550.

"Enjoy and Achieve" is central to all music lessons. At present, there are 20 pupils studying music at A level (Years 12 and 13) and 38 pupils studying G.C.S.E. Music (Years 10 and 11). In the last few years several of our pupils have gone on to study music at University or College. About 33% of all students take up extra music lessons provided by 18 visiting instrumental staff. We are a regular centre for Associated Board Music exams.

Music is greatly valued at the College and we offer Music Scholarships in Year 7 for Day and Boarding Places, and Year 12 for Boarding.
