Training German Teachers

As part of our Specialist Language College programme to nurture links with other educational institutions in the area, Wymondham College has recently become involved in the training of Primary Languages students at the School of Education and Lifelong Lea

Just prior to Christmas, Mrs Pfeiffer from our MFL department ran a German up-skilling Class for seven Primary PGCE students in preparation for their four-week placements at primary schools in Dresden and Leipzig, Germany. This work experience abroad is an integral course component for these UEA Primary PGCE students with a language option and forms part of the wider Anglo / French and Anglo / German trainee exchange programmes.

The primary aim of the German up-skilling was to assess and to strengthen the students’ confidence in their linguistic abilities. This was a challenging task as the range of proficiency spanned from that of a top GCSE student to degree level but also included the fluency of two native speakers.

Further aims were to give the students an insight into the German educational system in general and that of the State of Sachsen (Saxony) in particular and to introduce them to language and culture specific lesson-planning terminology. One of the modules required all students to design a inter-curricular science unit that integrated elements of English language and culture teaching.

The PGCE students are now back from their work placements in Germany and unanimously commented upon their time abroad as ”incredibly enjoyable” granting them all a “valuable experience”.
