Le Château

On 16th March, as part of our specialist Language College programme, we once again invited all primary pupils, their parents and teachers from our local cluster schools to the College to watch a French play.

The year is 1540. A young English Knight, William Babbington, is journeying to France in search of a beautiful French Mademoiselle. But not for himself, he has been sent by King Henry VIII to find him a suitable wife - his fourth! Once he has located a suitable match he is to paint her portrait and return to England to collect his reward. William arrives in France totally ill-equipped. He can't speak French, he has no idea where he is going and, most importantly, he can't even paint! Despite all that, and a very stubborn horse, William marches off to the nearest town. After a confusing and rather awkward encounter with a French peasant, William learns of beautiful young Mademoiselle called Catherine living in small castle nearby. If this Catherine is truly beautiful all William has to do is convince her to be King Henry VIII's wife and paint her portrait. Easy? Not if you can't speak French or paint. The mischievous Catherine proves quite a handful for this naive English knight. For just gaining a glimpse of her puts his inventiveness to the test and his body in the moat! If William is to win the reward he is going to need all his wit, charm and determination.

Thank you to all parents and colleagues who accompanied the pupils to the play and well done to all pupils who found themselves speaking French on stage! As well as linguistic ability there is also obvious acting ability in the Wymondham area!
