Mathematics can be fun!

Sixth Form Mathematicians had a very practical test run of Newton's Laws on July 1st as they went indoor skydiving followed by professional level karting.

The purpose behind the trip was to extend and enhance students understanding of force, gravity, air resistance, speed, acceleration and centripetal & centrifugal forces by experiencing these forces for themselves. We believe that by doing these activities students will acquire a much better understanding of the concepts involved when completing theoretical and exam questions based on these later in class.

In the morning students were excited to learn how to ‘fly their bodies’ as they were guided through the basics of skydiving in a wind tunnel gaining the equivalent ‘drop time’ of three skydives.

After a quick lunch and a safety briefing they then spent time discovering the ‘racing line’ and pushing their karts to the limit - and sometimes over the 70mph! – around the international circuit of Daytona Motorsports (Milton Keynes).

Mathematics really can be great fun!
