Why study Sociology?
The course introduces students to Sociology as a study of human society. This consists of individuals belonging to groups, which may vary in size, from, for instance, the family or school, to the total population of a given area.
In its study of society Sociology looks at the way in which people’s behaviour, beliefs and identity are shaped. Some sociologists believe that it is social institutions like the media, education, religion, the law and families that play a major role in doing this. There is also an introduction to sociological methodology through an investigation, which is undertaken as coursework.
Studying Sociology may be a first step towards a career in the caring professions, education, the media, or the criminal justice system. It will certainly provide a new perspective on the social world in which we live.
