A trip to the Olympic site at Stratford
Year 9 Geography students from Wymondham College took a tour around the Olympic site at Stratford this week to see the building works in progress for next year’s Games and also to learn more about the legacy of sustainability through the buildings that it leaves behind.
Two students gave their thoughts on the trip:
Selena said “I thought the trip was brilliant, very informative, exciting and well-planned. I learnt a lot about the impact that the Olympics will have, not just on London and the Stratford area, but on the entire UK. I found out that the Olympic buildings will be environmentally friendly, and they will all be served by a combined heat and power station that will continue to serve the area after the Olympics. The Olympics will leave a legacy of sustainability through the buildings that it leaves behind and the uses the buildings are put to; for example the Athletes' Village will be converted into 2,800 flats.
Daisy said “I found the trip really interesting, especially looking at the environmental impact of the Olympics on Stratford. This area of London was new to me and helped me to appreciate the positive impacts the Olympics could have on that area. I am not a particular sports fan, but I found looking at the wider implications of the Olympics really interesting. I realised that the effects are much more obvious in Stratford, compared to Norfolk, and this really is about Stratford hosting the Olympics, rather than London. The trip left me wondering whether I would ever have reason to return to Stratford, however, and whether the developments were sustainable in that way.
The College will be hosting it’s own Olympic inspired event in the summer of 2012 when nine of the College’s partner schools from across the world have been invited to ‘World Class at Wymondham’, a programme of events and projects inspired by Olympic values to be held at The College from 1st to 7th July 2012.
