The Wymondham College Team prepares for the finals
Eco Dragons' Den is an innovative eco business ideas competition open to all Norfolk students in years 8-10 (ages 11-15) organised by this year's Carbon Management MBA students from the University of East Anglia in support of the Norwich Carbon Reduction Scheme.
Following a competition internally a team has been selected to represent the College in the finals where they will pitch their eco business ideas to the Eco Dragons. This will be held at the University of East Anglia in the award winning ZICER eco-building on 15 July 2009 at 7pm.
They will need to explain what their eco business idea is; how it will improve the environment; how it will make money; and who they will sell it to.
The Eco Dragons include:
· John Popely of Anglia Print and Publisher of Triangle Norwich
· Alder Tye, an Environmental Business Advisor at Norfolk County Council
· Finbarr Carter and Anne Francis, two business coaches from Bizzfizz
· Richard Willson, Environmental Strategy Manager at Norwich City Council
Teams from schools will be competing for great prizes to the value of £1600!
· The winning team will win £200 cash courtesy of Anglia Print and a fantastic day out for up to 30 students from the winning school at Sportspark that includes indoor climbing.
· The second placed team will win a high ropes adventure for up to 6 students and 2 adults with Extreeme Adventure at Weasenham Woods, Kings Lynn.
· Guaranteed prize for all finalists - each successful finalist is guaranteed to win a minimum prize of a family swim for up to 4 people courtesy of the Sportspark.
“We’re looking for innovative eco business ideas from students in years 8-10”, says Brenda Arthur, Chair of the Norwich Carbon Reduction Trust. “It’s not about who can come up with a flash new design, it’s about who can come up with an idea for a product and/or service that will work and result in people cutting their carbon emissions. The Eco Dragons are looking for the next generation of eco entrepreneurs who can show how their idea will make money and who they will sell it to.”
“Some of the best ideas for reducing carbon emissions are simple ones” added Jim Fielder, Eco Dragons’ Den Coordinator. “Homes and businesses can cut their energy bills and their carbon emissions by doing things like turning the thermostat down by one or two degrees and installing loft and cavity wall insulation. But we’ll need to go further than this if we’re to meet the challenging target of an 80% cut in carbon emissions by 2050 as set in the UK’s new Climate Change Act. Designing and producing products and services that make it easier and cheaper for people to go green is becoming very important”.
We wish the Wymondham College team the best of luck on 15th July.
