Shakespeare Day

On March 19th 2009 all Year Nine students took part in a Shakespeare day in preparation for the end of Key Stage 3 examinations.

To start the morning each English group performed a rehearsed scene, from Romeo and Juliet, in front of the rest of the year group. Types of performances varied dramatically from insightful modern day interpretations to superbly choreographed fight scenes. Everyone took part and it was a thoroughly enjoyable morning with some outstanding performances.

After lunch Year Nine assembled in The Chapel to watch a performance by Artefact Theatre Company. The four actors artfully played multiple roles in an abridged version of the play in Shakespearean English followed by a question and answer session. The students used this opportunity to ask the cast questions about how they had interpreted the play, how they developed their characters and, most importantly, how often the actors had been hurt during fight scenes, fallen off the stage or had things thrown at them.

Overall the day was a great success, combining fun and education, and we are all looking forward to next year.
