New

New Hall was built in 1967. Aerial 'photos of the time show the house under construction, surrounded by Nissen huts, with all the other boarding houses finished already.

Clearly College leaders of the time had run out of glorious figures from history to name the house after, and we duly became 'New Hall'.

The House was opened in September 1971 following the merger of Wakefield and Washington houses. Unlike the other houses, we have no brass plaque or other symbol to commemorate the event.

Excerpts from past College Magazines (kindly provided by Mrs Horne from the Library) show that New Hall has had mixed fortunes over the years in inter-house sport, chess, fancy dress competitions, quizzes, the School opera and other musical events. Our first win in the Mair Cup came in 1974, followed by a 'dry spell' until we won again in 1988. One illustrious visitor in 1974 was Margaret Thatcher, then Education Minister. Tragically no-one asked the Technology Department to craft a fitting tribute and ask her to unveil it. Thatcher House? Hmm!

Past students have gone on to represent England at pistol shooting and cricket. Another ended up at a 'home away from home' at Newhall, Cambridge.

As the seventh incumbent of the post of Head of House for New Hall I obviously have a lot to live up to.

Mrs Mary Quinton
Head of New Hall
