Life in Kett

A new member of the resident staff in Kett talks about his first year.

Being a new member of staff it was with more than a little trepidation that I arrived for my first night in the boarding house. Lots of questions were running through my head, how was I going to remember all the students names, what was I supposed to do during my duty, how would the students deal with someone new?

Within 5 minutes most of my fears were quelled, I was amazed at how receptive the students and staff within the house were. After a brief introduction during the evening house assembly, it seems I was to be the evening’s entertainment, as the natural inquisitive nature of the students kicked in and I fought my way through a barrage of questions. My first term flew by and everyone had been so welcoming that by the time the Christmas Formal came around it felt as though I had been a part of the house for years rather than just a few months.

When I told my friends and colleagues from my previous school that I was taking on a boarding role they thought I was mad. During the first couple of weeks I was beginning to agree with them as the transition into boarding meant juggling the balance between home life, marking and the boarding house. Once I had realised I needed to become more organised life became much easier.

People often say that where they work has a real sense of community but until I had experienced life at Wymondham College I would never had agreed. With my first year almost finished I feel extremely privileged to be a part of the Kett family and have enjoyed every minute, from muddling through the countless requests for help during prep to joining in with the 6 a side football on Sports Hall evenings.
