Kett Formal 2008

The formal write-up by Kett Formal Queen, Megan Eldridge

In true formal tradition, almost every female pupil stampeded back to their houses the minute the school bell rang, in an attempt to maximise their ‘me time’ in front of a mirror. Kett was no exception. There were rumours circulating that Mr Blakey also happened to be part of the mad dash, clearly his hair takes longer than he likes to admit or he needed to practice his pout for the formal photographs.

Two hours before hand a squad of year elevens and teachers set to work in an attempt to complete the daunting task of transforming Kett into a nineteen fifties diner. Many thanks must be given to all the parents who supplied decorations and electrical, they were much appreciated. To our surprise the afternoon flew by without any drastic problems, under Maser Jake Read’s careful hand and the watchful eye of Miss Bowen the cocktail bar was up and running in no time. Some individuals utilised the slight lack of things to do, allowing some time for nail painting in the office, in which Matron Wellsby displayed great talent (Year 10 girls-and certain boys-please note).

The girl’s side was a precarious jungle of wires connected to various hair appliances, the A dorms proved most difficult to fight through. The maze of wires made the crossing difficult but the wires were nothing compared to the girl’s occupying the dorms. The Year Nine girls looked absolutely incredible and I was very jealous that I had not looked so stunning at their age but I was surprised that so much beauty could be so chaotic! Many of them had twisted into various positions in an attempt to squeeze into a mirror that was already occupied by several others, makeup was strewn everywhere and beds were a tip. This chaos was not confined to one or two dorms, the energetic and jubilant atmosphere buzzed throughout the whole house.

Once downstairs people began to timidly approach the photographer smiling normally with their partner and/or friends, as the evening continued poses began to progress into more unconventional positions and smiles were replaced with pouts and silly faces. The Photographs also proved very informative, Mr Campbell’s popularity shone through and Sam Jacobs was clearly doing something right as he had a picture with nearly every girl in Kett. David Griffith kept his tradition and did not disappoint, his white shoes were certainly present which did not please Miss Georgie Wales his formal partner. Mrs Casanova wowed everyone when she appeared in her dress looking incredible, a definite come-back after her so called ‘holiday’.

Once everyone was seated and the introductions were over, Mr Blakey gave an extremely profound and insightful speech into fake tan and high heels, which did little to please Miss Georgie Wales (again) as both subjects were relevant to her. Clearly he has little knowledge of both subjects and might considered ‘Googling’ them before he intends to insult Georgie and all of the Kett girls again.

This year the food arrangements were slightly different. Instead of the usual cold meat and coleslaw approach, this year we ventured into the unknown ordering pizza, playing on Sainsbury’s good will and relying on the heroic mothers of students in Kett to mass produce the highlight of the meal, the desserts. A definite ‘Thank you’ must be said to all the parents who supplied Kett with food; thanks to many Kett males (Sam smith etc) nothing was wasted.

After the meal the Year Elevens left to assemble in the tech block leaving the responsibility to the Year tens to organise the clear up of the meal and set out the disco. The Year Tens showed great potential for next year, taking control and getting the job done. Years Nine, Eight and Seven deserve thanks for their hard work as well. The Year Elevens returned to find the social had already begun, and it was a matter of seconds before Jonny and David overthrew Jack Myers and had dominated the ‘DJ’ area. As the evening continued there where some disagreements over musical preferences but David seemed pretty resolute. Some teachers were even seen ‘getting their groove on’-Miss Ward. It was great to see the Year Sevens enjoying themselves and socialising with the other years, hopefully this will make the transition next year much easier for them.

Special thanks must go to Jack Myers for all his work with the electricals, the evening couldn’t have gone ahead without you. Also a huge thank you to Miss Bowen for spending nearly the entire content of the house budget and giving the house the best formal I’ve ever attended. You definitely did go out with a bang!
